How to Apply

The first step in becoming a fellow in Pulmonary Critical Care medicine is to apply to our prestigious program. The following guide is designed to help you navigate your application process, from filling out your application through your interview. If you have any questions about how to apply to the Pulmonary Fellowship program, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our division at (315) 464-6228.

Positions

For 2025-2026, there will be three positions available for Pulmonary Critical Care.

Accreditation Length: Six years

Program Size: 12

Program Length: Three years (two for CCM)

Application Process

All applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The deadline for completed applications is a date TBA at a later time. Appointments for the Fellowship Program will be made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All candidates must register through the NRMP. Our program ID is 13676615.

As of 2020, all fellowship interviews will be held virtually. Interview dates will be during the last three weeks of September and possibly the first week in October.

The application requires the following information:

  • Official medical school transcripts
  • Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations (USMLE, LMCC, COMPLEX, NBOME, FMGEMS, FLEX or NBME)
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A personal statement
  • A valid ECFMG certificate (if you graduated from medical school outside of the United States)
  • A copy of your medical school diploma (if you have graduated from medical school)
  • Three letters of recommendation are required

Additional Information

  • We review approximately 220 applications a year.
  • We interview approx. 10 candidates for every position available.
  • All candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate on or after
  • July 1, 2017, will be subject to a pre-employment (post-offer) drug test. This includes any prior Upstate resident/fellow who has had a break in service and is returning to employment. For candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate, drug screening and final results must be available prior to the first day of their program as a prerequisite to employment.
  • Starting the 2023-2024, Upstate will sponsor H1B visas for fellowship applicants.
