Hematology / Oncology
Cancer is one of the most common chronic diseases, second only to heart disease as a leading cause of death in the U.S.
The cancer program at the Department of Medicine at SUNY: Upstate Medical University is ranked in the top 20% of cancer care programs nationwide by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. It is the only program accredited by this organization in the 17-county area of central New York. We treat 16,000 cancer patients each year.

Our hematology/oncology specialists are experts in diseases of the blood as well as cancer. They provide chemotherapy treatments and bone marrow transplants for cancer care. Problems of coagulation, anemia, and other blood disorders are treated with transfusions, phlebotomy, and iron infusions. We offer a multidisciplinary approach to hemophilia care, neurologic-oncology services, breast cancer services, thoracic-oncology services, therapeutic apheresis, and allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplant services.
Our doctors are board-certified in hematology, oncology, or both, and provide cancer care on an inpatient and outpatient basis. We serve patients from a 17-county radius around central New York. Our physicians are supported by nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, specially trained registered nurses, and support staff.
