Orientation
Orientation for your Internal Medicine Residency program is mandatory and will guide you through your educational journey with us. There are two orientations residents will attend, which will provide them with the tools and resources they need to have a successful career. We encourage you to learn more about each of these orientations and their related materials below.
Institutional Orientation
The Institutional Orientation is a mandatory event for all residents. Each piece of information provided at this orientation is designed specifically to benefit residents and assist them in becoming familiar with Upstate's Institutional policies and procedures.
Departmental Orientation
Incoming residents are expected to attend all parts of the Departmental Orientation for their benefit. Each piece of information provided at this orientation has been designed to provide you with the tools and resources you need to become more familiar with our program policies and procedures.
For your convenience, we have created a schedule that allows incoming residents some downtime or time to take care of last-minute requirements. This "free time" is carved out in various points throughout the week to allow you to take care of miscellaneous activities such as finding an apartment or house near campus, updating your driver's license, signing up for Employee Health, and more.
As a new member of the Internal Medicine Department at SUNY Upstate Medical University, you are required to take an ACLS Provider course.
Your ACLS Provider training will be scheduled by EPO staff. You will be notified via email.
The ACLS course is conducted by the EM-STAT Center, 550 East Genesee Street.
The EM-STAT Center is part of the Department of Emergency Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
You will receive a welcome/reminder letter from the EM-STAT Center prior to your course date. In that letter, you will be asked to purchase an ECC handbook. Please note: You do not need to purchase the book, as the Department of Medicine will provide you with an ECC Handbook for the course. Your ECC Handbook will be distributed by the EM-STAT Center staff on the first day of ACLS Provider training. This Handbook is yours to keep. Please keep it in a safe place, as you will need it again for a refresher course during your second year of training.
ACLS Provider certification is only valid for 2 years. All residents are required to take an ACLS Refresher Course to recertify during the latter part of their R2 year. To schedule your ACLS Refresher Course, please visit ACLS Refresher Course. You will need to verify the date with the Chief residents prior to scheduling.
If you have any questions, please email the chief resident at UHChiefResident@upstate.edu.
Each resident in the Department of Medicine will receive 2 Lab Coats for their first year of training. In each subsequent year of training, each resident will be provided 1 replacement Lab Coat.
Each Lab Coat will be purchased and designed in uniform with the rest of the Department of Medicine. Each coat will be embroidered with "Department of Medicine" followed by the resident/physician's name.
Lab Coats are provided by Bayberry Uniform and are paid for by the Department of Medicine. Bayberry Uniform will be present at your Orientation to take proper measurements and ensure a good fit.
Lab Coats take approximately 2 weeks to receive once they are ordered. If you prefer to have your Lab Coats prior to July 1st, you may go directly to the Bayberry Uniform store for a fitting. Your name will be provided to them, and the cost will be covered by the Department of Medicine. We ask that you confirm the spelling of your name when your place your order. Failure to do so may result in a reorder, which means a delay in receiving your Lab Coat.
You may visit one of the locations listed below. Please call first to make sure your preferred location is open and able to accommodate your fitting.

Pagers will be distributed to incoming residents during the week of Orientation. If the resident would like the pager prior to this date, they may stop by the EPO (Room 5138 UH, 5th Floor of the hospital) and pick their pager up.
Each resident will be provided with an individual pager for their use throughout the entirety of their participation with the Department of Medicine. The pagers that are used are text-style pagers, which allow you to receive text messages in addition to phone numbers. This is very helpful when you are busy and cannot answer your pages immediately.
If you complete your residency and continue on as a Chief/Fellow/Faculty, you will be able to keep this pager number as long as you are within the Department of Medicine.
If there is a problem with your pager or you need a battery, please see the EPO office for assistance.
If it is after hours or the office is closed, please report to the main hospital security office on the 1st floor of University Hospital. They will be able to assist you further.
