Finding a Place to Live
Whether you are looking to rent or buy, the possibilities are endless in the Syracuse area and surrounding suburbs.
Syracuse, NY, is located in Onondaga County which is considered to be the Center of New York. Our central location means we are within five hours of every major metro in the east, including New York City, Boston, Toronto, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. But, your housing dollar goes much further in Syracuse, with the median selling price of a home in Onondaga County being $200,000. Depending on your amenities in apartment living, the average price of monthly rent is $1,000 to $1,400, often times including all utilities.
Living in Central New York means finding a home that meets your lifestyle at a more affordable price than many other places in the country. Whatever your lifestyle, you will find plenty of choices, from apartments located within walking distance to the hospital to apartments in the suburbs, to upscale city living, to large suburban family homes, to townhouses and patio homes for people whose children have grown or for professionals who don't want the maintenance of a single-family house.
Urbanism has really exploded, with the renovation of trendy downtown districts into city dwellings. We are creating an atmosphere where many people like to live because of the community, the downtown and districts like Armory Square and Hanover Square offer opportunities for both renters and homebuyers.
Renting vs. Buying Tips
Housing is very affordable in the Syracuse area, so we often get questions about "Renting vs. Buying".
We have provided here many options for apartment living. That works great for most people, especially during the first year. However, in an effort to provide as many options as possible and as much relocation advice as possible, we recently approached Aspect Real Estate and Consulting to enlist their assistance in this area. They have provided an informational cheat sheet to help you determine what would work best for you. Feel free to contact them for further information.
Craigslist
Many landlords and apartment complexes utilize Craigslist as a place to advertise their properties for rent! Sometimes, you can find a great "Move In" deal on Craigslist that you won't be offered if you just visit the property.
Sometimes, you can find a nice house or part of a house to rent that offers more than the typical apartment building. If you decide to go this route, make sure you ask about snow removal, utilities, parking, etc., as those are things that can add cost or inconvenience to the home. If you have questions or need advice about certain properties or locations, please do not hesitate to ask. This would be a good question for your Big Brother/Big Sister, or feel free to email Deb Killian for advice.
