Program Overview

Our wide catchment area provides exposure to every conceivable pathology related to blood disorders and cancer. This in turn translates into a strong, well-rounded training for our fellows. Our fellows make sound hematologists/oncologists, respected by peers and their patients—that’s our promise!

As a cancer training program in Hematology and Medical Oncology we strive to train outstanding clinicians and scholars. We believe in diligence, compassion and (undying) commitment to our patients and families. You will find that the faculty in the division truly lead by example. We pride ourselves in offering a warm and cordial environment for training with strict adherence to ACGME/RRC work-hour regulations. We seek to foster strong, life-long relationships among peers and faculty.

Upstate Cancer Services are consistently rated in the top 10% nationwide by ACS. We offer a combined 3-year Hematology and Medical Oncology program. We have expanded our program from a total of 4 to 6 fellows in 2010, 7 fellows in 2011, to 8 fellows in 2012 and 9 fellows in 2015. The major teaching venues are the Upstate University Hospital, Upstate Cancer Center, the VA Medical Center, Syracuse, and a consultative service at Upstate University Hospital at Community Campus. The division of Hematology/Oncology is the largest subspecialty division in the Department of Medicine with 15 clinical faculty. The VAMC in addition, has 2 faculty members.

We have a well-respected Department of Radiation Oncology at Upstate. We have a 6-bed Bone Marrow Transplant Unit where we offer autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants. A full complement of services and departments including Pathology, Hematopathology, Transfusion Medicine, Surgical Oncology, Psychiatry, Social Work, Nutrition, Bioethics and Palliative Care Services, typical of a large academic tertiary care hospital are available on site. There are a plethora of research opportunities including basic science, translational research as well as clinical research. The program promises mentorship and offers the fellows the autonomy to choose and pursue research in an area of their interest.
