Interstitial Lung Disease Program

Interstitial lung diseases (ILD) are a group of lung disorders that affect the tissues and spaces around the air sacs in the lungs. ILD can cause shortness of breath, a persistent cough, and fatigue; amongst other symptoms.

One of the most common forms of ILD is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), which occurs when the lungs become scarred and inflamed. IPF is a progressive disease, meaning it worsens over time. There is no cure for IPF, but treatments exist to slow disease progression and preserve the quality of life, while extending life expectancy.

ILD is a relatively rare condition, but its incidence is increasing. While the exact cause of ILD is unknown, factors have been identified that contribute to it. These include; genetic predispositions, exposures to toxins and pollutants, and autoimmune or connective tissue diseases.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important interventions to optimally manage ILD.

The diagnosis of ILD is made by a combination of clinical and radiographic findings. In addition, when you arrive at our clinic, you may complete a lung function test and blood work. These will be used to help guide treatment.

Another part of the evaluation will include a chest computed tomography (Chest CT). You may have had this completed outside of our program at another hospital.

In select cases, further lung tissue biopsies may be required to confirm a diagnosis.

Most symptoms can arise in other disease processes. Commonly encountered symptoms include:

• Shortness of breath
• Dry cough
• Chest pain
• Weakness & fatigue
